Determination of Film Thickness by Magnetic Method and Eddy Current Method

MAGNETIC METHOD: This standard covers the measurement of the dry film thickness of non-magnetic coatings (including vitreous and enamel coatings) on magnetic metals using a non-destructive method. Magnetic coating thickness measurement devices measure the magnetic attraction between the base metal, which is affected by the presence of the coating, and a permanent magnet, or they measure the fluctuations in magnetic flux passing through both the coating and the base metal.

EDDY CURRENT METHOD: This standard covers the non-destructive measurement of coating thickness on non-magnetic, conductive substrates (typically metals) using amplitude-sensitive eddy current devices. An eddy current probe (or the device associated with it) is placed on the surface of the coating to be measured, and the coating thickness is read from the device.
